John Vass was born at Coonamble, NSW in 1888. He was an accountant. He enlisted on 3 June 1915 giving as next of kin his wife Ethel, living at Smith Street, Manly.

He embarked on 2 November 1915 and served with the 20th Battalion then with the 56th Battalion. He was promoted to Lance-Corporal on 2 April 1916. He was wounded in action in the head on 20 July 1916. He was promoted to Corporal on 15 December 1916, and Sergeant on 9 March 1918. He was wounded in an air raid on 13 August 1918.

After the war, he was sent to study accounting in London, before returning to Australia on the Borda on 9 December 1919.
