Stanley Wainwright was born at Wimbledon, England in 1897. He was a farmer prior to enlisting. He enlisted in the 11th Engineering Reinforcements on 23 June 1915, giving as next of kin his father living at Smith Street, Manly.

He embarked on the Beltanaon 9 November 1915 and served with the 1st Field Company Engineers in France. He was hospitalized twice with VD, in July 1916 and November 1918.

He returned to Australia on the Port Darwin on 12 June 1919.
