Les Wellings was born at Kogarah in 1889 and was a clerk. He enlisted on 6 September 1915, giving as next of kin his wife, living at Victoria Parade, Manly.

He embarked on 9 November 1915 and served with the 30th Battalion. He was Battalion Bandmaster with the rank of Sergeant. He was hospitalized in March 1917 with trench fever. He was transferred to the 8th Battalion in 1918. He returned to Australia on the Devanha on 8 May 1919. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, gazetted 3 June 1919.

He later became Town Clerk of Manly.
