Edwin Wiltshire was born at Adelaide on 16 February 1899 and was a carpenter’s apprentice with the Sydney Harbour Trust. He enlisted on 19 October 1917 giving as next of kin his father, living at Surfers Parade, Freshwater.

He embarked on the aptly named Wiltshire on 2 February 1918 and served as a Gunner with the 36th Heavy Artillery Brigade. He was hospitalized with VD in July 1919 and returned to Australia on the Ascanius on 23 September 1919.
