A scow is a flat-bottomed sailing vessel and “auxiliary” means it has been fitted with a motor, in this case some time after it was built.
It was on its way to Sydney from Auckland and was under tow for the last part of the voyage when it went aground on Long Reef on October 14 or 15, 1942.
