Record number41678Datec.1943DescriptionIn late April 1942, amid World War II, an RAAF Radar Station (No. 101/54) was established at Collaroy Plateau to help plot the movements of aircraft and ships approaching Sydney.
The station operated throughout the war and was one of the most critical sites for air warning for Sydney.
It also served as a test site, by the CSIRO, into radiophysics. This led to the first successful experiment in Australia in the new field that would become radio astronomy. It occurred at sunrise on 3 October 1945 at Collaroy Plateau using one of the RAAF radars.

The station was officially decommissioned in February 1946 following the end of hostilities and the equipment ultimately removed from the site.

The radar station was dismantled in 1946.
