Mr Foster was born at Crookwell, NSW. He was a carpenter to trade. His father John Foster lived at Sydney Road, Balgowlah. Harold Foster served with the Manly Militia prior to enlisting.

He enlisted on 28 April 1916 aged 20 years and 4 months; as he was under 21, his sister as guardian gave her consent.

He embarked on 7 October 1916. He was wounded in the right arm on 11 April 1917, and spent the remainder of that year in England, recuperating and undergoing training.

He returned to France on 6 February 1918, and was killed in action on 4 July 1918. His sister was Mrs Alice Furlonger of Osborne Road, Manly.
